For many nurses, finding the perfect work-rest ratio is a tough choice. Long 12-hour shifts offer the perk of more days off in a row, which is perfect for travel, relaxation, or catching up on other tasks. But these long hours can also take a toll on your body and mind, leading to faster burnout.

The allure of multiple days off, especially during summer and holidays, is strong. However, surviving a 12-hour shift requires skill and perseverance. Every nurse eventually finds their own formula for success. If you're still figuring out yours, here are seven tips from veteran nurses:
Sleep Well
To stay awake and alert during your shift, prioritize quality sleep. Sleep deprivation affects your performance and well-being. Ensure you're well-rested before starting your long shift to better manage stress.
Eat Right
Good nutrition fuels your body for a 12-hour shift and boosts your mood and health. Avoid sugary snacks and choose nutritious foods with protein, healthy carbs, and fats to keep your energy up.
Hydrate Properly
While caffeine can help with alertness, overindulgence can lead to exhaustion and disrupt your sleep. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water to maintain energy and focus.
Wear Comfortable Shoes
You’ll be on your feet a lot, so invest in lightweight, supportive shoes. Good footwear prevents pain and supports your back, knees, feet, and joints during those long hours.
Take Breaks
Amidst a busy shift, it's crucial to take your scheduled breaks. Use this time to rest and recharge, avoiding distractions like phone scrolling. Proper breaks improve your well-being and performance.
Live Healthy
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle helps you handle the physical and mental stress of long shifts. Regular exercise strengthens your body, and spending your days off with loved ones boosts your emotional health.
Embrace Teamwork
"Teamwork is dream work." Collaborate with your colleagues to enhance effectiveness and reduce stress. Your team understands your struggles and can provide valuable support—don’t hesitate to ask for help when needed.
